It is named after the Russian botanist Mussin-Pushkin,
who lived in the 18th century, but is commonly known as Russian Snowdrop. This
low rising plant is closely related to Scilla Siberica and Chionodoxa, but it
flowers earlier.
Each bulb produces two or three grassy
leaves. Between them a stalk rises, carrying thick bunches of snow white
star-shaped little flowers. Is looks vulnerable but appearances can be deceptive
because this early flowering charmer starts flowering at temperatures below
zero. Still too early for bees, but they will find the Russian Snowdrops as
soon as the temperature rises. It multiplies freely, but is not invasive. It
thrives under moist circumstances. This long flowering plant makes an impact
under trees and shrubs, and adds elegance to a border or rock garden.
