The Siberian Squill.
In early spring each bulb produces 3 or 4
stems with bunches of intensely, almost fluorescent, blue flowers with a dark
stripe in the middle of each petal. This little garden flower with its friendly
nodding heads was proclaimed Bulb of the Year in 2010. It prefers moderately
manured, moist but well-drained soil. After flowering the leaves should not be
cut off until they die back, just like other bulb flowers. The leaves give the
plant energy for the next flowering season. Sometimes scilla siberica
multiplies by forming seed. It is frost resistant and will tolerate dry
periods. This small flower has a great effect and is highly attractive for
bees.
