Muscari opriginates from Turkey, Greece,
Bulgaria and the Caucasus. The name comes from the Greek word moschos, meaning
musk, and refers to the sweet fragrance. Armeniacum comes from Armenia in the
Causasus.
Commonly known as grape hyacinth, it is a
cheerful perennial with striking blue flowers. Every bulb produces 2-3 long
leaves with a dark green back side and a lighter blueish green upper side. The
little bell-shaped flowers start out sitting closely together, and grow more
losely later on. The individual petals have a delicate white rim. After
flowering they form very decorative seed heads. The grape hyacinth prefers a
sunny place in a moist, well-drained soil, but also thrives under trees and
shrubs. It naturalizes easily. Plant it in quantities to obtain a blue sea of
flowers, or spruce up your border with small dots of blue. Muscari Armeniacum
also is very suitable for potting indoors or outdoors.
